Description

Outeniqua Trout Lodge is a small owner managed mountain retreat. We are ideal for people who appreciate nature and an abundance of bird life. Only 55 kilometres from Knysna, our lodge offers a relaxed getaway to experience nature, sunshine and fresh air. One of the highlights is fly fishing in both rivers and dams for Rainbow and Brown Trout.

Take a lazy afternoon stroll on our peaceful farm, stop for a swim in our mountain water pool or enjoy an energetic walk or bike ride in the fresh mountain air. If Fly Fishing is not your passion, then enjoy a hike up the Kwaai River where you can see bushman paintings, enjoy pristine water pools and experience unspoiled nature at its best.

If you enjoy mountain biking then you can take the challenge up the mountain or cycle the Prince Alfred Pass towards either Knysna or Uniondale, both offering breathtaking scenic views.

We have four well-appointed self-catering log cabins that sleep up to 6 people each. Two of the cabins are situated on a stocked trout dam and the other two above the farm with views over the mountain pass and farm valley. All cabins are well spaced for privacy.

The cabins are semi equipped with a kitchen, a main en-suite bedroom with a queen-size bed and shower. The second bedroom has two 3/4 beds. The second bathroom is equipped with a shower and bath. In the lounge area there is a comfortable sleeper couch and a ceramic fireplace for those cold winter nights. Outside there is a spacious deck with table and chairs. A Webber braai is provided. All linen and bath towels are provided. 

What do you have to bring – Lodges?
-Swimming towels. Briquettes & fire lighters for the Webber braai. Food & personal items needed. 

Our TiPi Camp is an “Eco friendly” permanent camp tucked away under pecan trees. Here you can enjoy the camps facilities. The camp is ideal for groups & families.

Each tent is equipped with 4 single beds; all bedding, linen & bath towels are provided. For the winter months there is a small ceramic fireplace inside each tent. In a separate building there are 4 private bathrooms, one for each tent. The bathroom is equipped with a hot shower, washbasin, flush toilet and non-removable lamps. The 60sq lapa consists of a basic equipped kitchen and a dining area with 4 picnic tables. 40sq of the lapa is under roof. On arrival each tent will get a container equipped with crockery & cutlery. There is a open air “fire ball” for socializing around in the evening. Spacious open-air braai area. “Biofuel ” 2-plate stoves for cooking. A 320L combination fridge freezer to be shared by the 4 tents. Limited shaded parking for vehicles.

Our climate is a mixture between mild coastal and crisp Klein Karoo, especially in winter when you can enjoy the clear cold evenings in front of our famous ceramic fireplaces. Summers are known for glorious evenings and romantic nights with stars one can pluck from the sky. We offer two accommodation types for our guest.

Please Note:
Due to us being situated in the mountains mobile phones have no reception; you are advised to give your family our landline number should they need to get hold of you in an emergency.
Occasionally, we may experience telephone problems, so it is best to send an e-mail when making an enquiry or reservation.
Since we are part of a conservancy, please NO Pets.
No smoking is allowed in the lodges or inside the TiPi tents.
We do not allow any music, generators or loud noise.
We generate our own electricity and regret that guests cannot use any additional electrical equipment other than what is supplied in the Lodges or in the Tipi Camp.
Security deposits will be refunded 48 hours after departure.
In order to confirm a reservation we do require a non-refundable 50% deposit to confirm a booking. The balance is due cash on arrival.
Should you cancel your booking, your deposit will be forfeited unless we can fill it with another booking OR you can visit us at another date convenient to both parties within the same year. Conditions will apply.
The owners and staff hereby indemnify themselves of any loss, injury or damage caused to yourselves or your property during your stay at Outeniqua Trout Lodge.
Be aware that you are in the wild, there are snakes, baboons, spiders, scorpions and other animals, they occur naturally here. In most cases they are more afraid of you then you are of them. So for your own safety be aware, close your doors when you are out of the cottage or tents.

Accommodation

 Permanent Tented Camp

 Four spacious Indian (teepee) tents make up our wonderful Camp Gwaai, nestled in a pecan tree forest. The camp is ideal for individuals, couples, families & small or large groups.

Each tent has:

• four ¾ beds
• cotton linen
• an extra blanket
• bath towels
• for the chilly winter nights we supply hot water bottles
• wood for the ceramic wood-burning fireplace
• Each tent has its own private bathroom with hot shower and toilet
  (ablution style).

There is a large communal lapa equipped with open plan kitchen, shared fridge and gas cooker. We provide you with your own cutlery, crockery and groceries cupboard. Enjoy social evenings and campfires around the "fire ball" (braai wood and stumps provided)

This is the ultimate in luxury, affordable camping. All you need to bring are swimming towels and food.

Lodge

We offer comfortable, private and quiet accommodation in four wooden lodges. Two are situated up on the mountainside, with spectacular views of sunsets and the mountains. The others are built on the tranquil stocked trout dam.

All four lodges are attractively and comfortably furnished to ensure visitors of a relaxing and enjoyable stay in this tranquil mountain setting. They are fully equipped with cotton linen, towels,

kitchen utensils, outside braai (barbeque) facilities and have their own private decks. They all have ceramic wood burning fireplaces – fire and braai wood supplied.

Each lodge consists of two separate bedrooms - a main bedroom en suite and a twin room with its own family bathroom. The double sofa in the lounge can also be converted in a double bed, giving maximum occupancy of six people.

- Fish Eagle -

Fish Eagle is situated high up on the hill with views of the magnificent mountains both West as well as East enabling one to see stunning sunrise and sunsets without getting off the sofa. One can look down on the river as well as the  "Nursery" dam to see when the fish are rising.  Because the deck is open one can see the stars at night without going outside.  This lodge is ideal for those who enjoy panoramic views.

 

- Loerie -

Loerie is situated high up on the hillside surrounded by indigenous bush with the Kwaai River some distance below.  The large covered deck faces West making it ideal for private afternoon sun bathing. Both bedrooms are situated to the back of the lodge with the entertainment area to the front. Being built on stilts this lodges offers covered parking. In the evening you can relax on the solid wood deck furniture while watching the sunset over the Outeniqua & Kammanasie mountain range.  This lodge is ideal for those who seek privacy.

- King Fisher -

King Fisher is one of the two lodges situated above a trout dam. The covered deck faces East and is equipped with solid wood furniture.  Both bedrooms are situated to the back of the lodge with the entertainment area to the front.  Relax to the sound of running water and many waterfowl that frequent the waters. This lodge favours those who enjoy a sunny morning breakfast.

- Hoopoe -

Hoopoe is the first lodge situated on a trout dam with views over our pecan grove. The covered deck faces East with the main bedroom leading to the deck that overlooks the water. Here you can relax on the waters edge and enjoy the sight of fly fishermen trying their hand at catching trout.  This lodge is ideal for those who enjoy being close to the water.

Directions

How far are we from the closest town: • Oudtshoorn (135km) via the N9 & Jonkrus De Vlugt Road • Uniondale (45km) via the R339 - Prince Alfred’s Pass • Knysna (55km) via the R339 – Prince Alfred’s Pass • George (108km) via the N9, Jonkrus - De Vlught Road, R339 – Prince Alfred’s Pass • P.E (250km) via R62, Humansdorp – N9 Avontuur – Prince Alfred’s Pass When travelling from Oudtshoorn/George you travel on the N9 towards Uniondale. • About 60km after the Oudtshoorn turn you will pass "The Palm Cafe" this is the last petrol stop. • Another 6km later the road makes a long turn to the left and you pass a biscuit colored house on the right. • Slow down, look out for the road sign warning you that a right turn is up ahead. • Turn right on the De Vlugt, Jonksrus road. • Travel on this well kept gravel road for ±20km. • At the T-Junction right towards Knysna. • You are now on the Prince Alfred's Pass. • Continue for about 600m and look out for our signs turning to the left. When travelling from Port Elizabeth on the N2 towards Plettenberg Bay. • Turn off at the Karreedouw/Langkloof sign onto the R62. • Continue for ±120km past Joubertina/Misgund onto Avontuur. • Turn left towards Avontuur, pass the little village and continue towards Knysna/Plettenberg Bay. • Continue on this gravel road till you get to the valley of De Vlugt. • You will pass a telephone booth and a small tea garden. • Look out for our signs and turn down to your left towards our farm. When travelling from Knysna you travel on the R339. • Travel out of Knysna towards Plettenberg Bay. • On top of the hill opposite the turn to Noetsie turn left into the informal settlement, Avontuur/Uniondale. • The tar road becomes a gravel road. • You are now on the Prince Alfred Pass. • Keep on this road till you see our farm on our right down in the valley. • Look out for our sign boards turning down to the right. When travelling from Plettenberg Bay you travel on the R340. • Travel out of Plettenberg Bay towards Port Elizabeth. • Just over the Bitou bridge turn left towards Wittedrif/Avontuur/Uniondale. • The tar road will eventually become a gravel road. • Continue till you get to a T-Junction, turn right towards Avontuur/Uniondale. • After the T-Junction it is another ±23km to the farm. • You are now on the Prince Alfred Pass. • Keep on this road till you see our farm on our right down in the valley. • Look out for our sign boards turning to the right.
